ATTENTION, all you dessertees and/or do-gooders! CAC (Combat Against Cancer) is having a DESSERT PARTY FUNDRAISER this Saturday, June 27th to raise money for the Avon Breast Cancer Foundation. Desserts awaiting your salivating mouths include brownies, baklava, cream puffs, and many more.  Baked. is ecstatically participating by providing 100 freshly baked, drool-worthy dark chocolate chip cookies and checkerboard cookies! Behind…….as usual… . . . . . .

If they gave out awards for most increasingly neglected blog, mine would take the prize, or rather, the cake. HO ho ho…. (In my world, I am funny so, shh). I have newfound respect for website developers. Anyhoo, where to begin? So, recently I embarked on my first fondant-covered cake (all homemade, bien sûr).  A childhood friend had requested a cake – any cake – for her baby shower, and I decided to go all out to challenge myself and to make it really special for her and her husband since it’s their first kid (girl). It took quite a lot of patience, time, and arm strength but it was completely worth it! However, I admit I had to use gelatin for the fondant which is unacceptable in our animal-friendly kitchen, so I need to find a way to create it w/o. Some pictures:

As you can see, it’s bumpy here and there, definitely room for improvement, but overall I was pretty happy with it.  Pearlin and Steven were pleasantly surprised and it was a hit so that’s all that mattered. Congrats, Pearlin and Steven! I’m so happy for you guys 🙂 (By the way, please check out Steven’s product for young students, MathScore.com®. He, along with a few other fellow MIT graduates, worked tirelessly on creating such a great and useful supplement to math education. Even better, right now they’re providing all K-12 summer school programs with free usage to help offset the budget cuts on education, so teachers, sign up now!)

Letsee, what else….also perfected checkerboard cookies in 3 flavors: cocoa, green tea, and coffee. Rich, tender shortbread cookies that aren’t too sweet and are particularly delightful with some tea like English Breakfast or Viennese coffee. MmmMMmmm. A box of these make a great gift as they are visually pleasing, especially in a mixed set. I want to create more flavors, like strawberry or pineapple, but I’ll probably need to invest in a dehydrator.  S’more picturas:

Hmmm…I guess that’s it for now. Probably not particularly exciting but fear not, updates will be added later tonight. I sleep like an insomniac.

HOT & FRESH Updates!

FINALLY!!!  Sorry for the inexcusable delay…Updates include minor additions/changes to the menu: added a few more varieties to cookies, scones, and cupcakes as well as a few pictures here and there. Also, be sure to head on over to the music section; there’s a new playlist: “The Island“. Summer’s already makin’ its way in, might as well start gettin’ in the moood. Oh and there’s a new Baked. artist: the sexy Seu Jorge do Brasil. Ele e um gostosão. YUM.

Plant Master Plan Workshop

Did you know that San Jose ‘s Water Pollution Control Plant is one of the largest and most advanced in the country? I shore didn’t, which is why I’m attending the Plant Master Plan Workshop on Saturday, May 16th.

The Story: The plant receives, processes, and treats the wastewater from residents and businesses in San Jose, Santa Clara, Saratoga, Cupertino, Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Milpitas, and a few other neighboring cities. Wastewater that comes from doing laundry, flushing the toilet, doing the dishes, and taking a shower go to this treatment plant.

The Issue: Now more than 50 years old, its infrastructure is aging and needs to be addressed. If you are interested, you can still sign up by this Wednesday for the free workshop or you can always go on a bus tour of the plant (which goes from May to November). Not only will this be extremely informative about the facility and its processes themselves, I guarantee you’ll go away being more environmentally aware of things you’ve never thought of before. Warning: it may smell a little gross when you first get there…but then (according to a very credible source) you get used to it 🙂  Hope to see you there! (thinking of bringing Baked. cookies, though not sure how that’ll pan out w/ the smells haha)

UPDATE: When I was there it actually didn’t smell at all, only at one particular spot we stopped very briefly at. You’re actually on a very nice tour bus the whole time and even when walking around the parking lot, I didn’t notice anything foul.

Hey folks! Soo…..I know I’ve been incredibly behind on updating this website, BUT….. that will come soon, I promise 🙂

Anyway, here at Baked., we live to eat, but sadly, that is a luxury for most of the world where people can’t even eat to live. There is a big important event coming up in May (23 & 24 to be exact)….SOUPSTOCK! What it is is a FREE concert and convergence celebrating the 29th anniversary of Food Not Bombs, organized by its SF regional chapter (see Community).

FNB is a grassroots global effort that works hard to cook and distribute free and delicious vegetarian meals to anyone who needs it. Chapters exist all over the world, bringing about peace through the simple and powerful act of feeding the hungry. As described on its blog, SF’s FNB hopes to use this event as an opportunity to create dialogue about food justice, poverty, the current
crisis, and to plan many 30th anniversary actions/celebrations around the world,
so we could use all the help we need. Even if you can’t volunteer, it’s contribution enough to spread the word and/or show up with your beautiful faces and have a good time. Did I mention it’s free?

Biting the Big Apple: T-6 days
